Site Rules

How DuckSubs works

The rules that govern selling, buying, and forking on DuckSubs. Everything here applies to every user on the platform.

Revenue Splits

Direct sales (Open Shelf & Closed Shelf)
The developer keeps 90%. DuckSubs takes a flat 10% platform fee. No tiers, no negotiations, no hidden charges beyond standard Stripe processing fees.
Fork sales
The fork builder keeps 70%. The creator of the product that was forked (one level up) receives a 20% royalty. DuckSubs takes 10%. This split applies regardless of how deep the fork chain goes — the 20% always goes to the immediate parent, not the original creator.
Self-fork sales
If you fork your own product, the 20% royalty goes to you. In practice this means you keep 90% (70% + 20%) and DuckSubs takes 10%, the same as a direct sale.

Forking

What can be forked
Only Open Shelf products can be forked. Closed Shelf products cannot be forked.
Who can fork
Any signed-in user can fork any Open Shelf product, including their own. Multiple people can fork the same product at the same time. There is no approval process or first-refusal mechanism.
Fork depth
There is no limit. A fork can be forked, and that fork can be forked again. Each fork is its own product with its own price, description, and listing.
Self-forking
You can fork your own product. This acts as an upgrade — a new version you can sell alongside or instead of the original. Self-forks are nested beneath the original product in browse views to avoid cluttering the marketplace.
Attestation
Before you can list a fork for sale, you must describe what you changed or improved. This improvement note is displayed publicly on the product page. Minimum 20 characters.
Notifications
When someone forks your product, you receive a notification on your dashboard. Self-forks do not trigger notifications (you already know).
Lineage
Every product page shows its full fork lineage — a chain from the original product through every fork down to the current one. Attribution is permanent and cannot be removed.
Quality enforcement
There is no automated quality gate beyond attestation. The market enforces quality: if a fork adds nothing meaningful, nobody will buy it when the original exists with more trust and reviews. Lazy forks die on the vine.

Listing Requirements

Pricing
Products can be priced between $1 and $500. All prices are one-time purchases. Recurring charges and subscriptions are not permitted on DuckSubs.
GitHub hosting
All software must be hosted on GitHub. DuckSubs generates signed download links from your GitHub releases. You maintain your own repository.
Stripe account
You must connect a Stripe account through the dashboard before your buy buttons will activate. Stripe handles KYC verification.
Accuracy
Product descriptions must accurately represent what the software does. Claiming your tool replaces a subscription it does not actually replace will result in removal.

Support

Support status is required
Every product listing must declare its support status. There are two options and no middle ground.
Actively supported
The developer accepts bug reports and ships updates. This is a public commitment shown on the product page and in browse cards. If a product is marked “actively supported” but the developer stops responding, the product may be flagged for abandonment review.
As-is
The software works in its current state. The developer makes no promises about future updates, bug fixes, or support. Buyers see this clearly before purchasing.
Version updates
Developers can push updates to buyers at any time from their dashboard. When an update is pushed, every buyer of that product is notified on their purchases page. Updates are developer-initiated — there is no automatic sync with GitHub releases.
Support channel
DuckSubs does not provide a built-in support system. For actively supported products, the developer's GitHub Issues page serves as the support channel. DuckSubs is a marketplace, not a helpdesk.

Buying & Refunds

Ownership
When you buy a product, it is yours permanently. There is no ongoing subscription, no license expiry, and no access revocation.
Downloads
After purchase, you receive a signed download link valid for 48 hours with a limited number of downloads. You can generate a fresh link from your My Purchases page at any time.
Refund window
All purchases have a 7-day refund window. If the software does not work as described, you get your money back. The developer covers the refund cost.

Conduct

No malware
Software listed on DuckSubs must not contain malware, spyware, cryptocurrency miners, or any code designed to harm the buyer or their system.
No impersonation
Do not list products that impersonate other developers or products. Forks must be clearly identified as forks, and the original creator is attributed automatically through the lineage system.
No plagiarism
Do not list software you did not build or do not have the right to distribute. If forking, you must make meaningful changes — a rename-and-relist is not a fork, it is theft.

Abandonment & Succession

Abandoned products
If a product goes unsupported for an extended period and buyers report issues, DuckSubs may open it for succession — another developer can pick it up and continue maintaining it.
Succession process
Succession does not transfer ownership of the original listing. A successor creates a new product (effectively a fork) and existing buyers are notified of the alternative.
